Sam is here to talk to you about a 12 hour day in the film industry, and what that means for you the client. 12 hour days, don’t necessarily mean 12 hours of footage.

Film works on a 12 hour day instead of an 8 hour day. This day begins when the crew shows up to set. This includes set up, break down, food breaks, shooting and wrapping. Set up can take 30 minutes, or a few hours depending on the equipment needed and if there’s access to the site the night before. after 6 hours, lunch is legally required to be served, and to that point the break timer doesn’t start until the last person gets their food so that they will have time to eat it.

After shooting, time is needed to not only break down, but properly offload footage. For something like a Live Event, this step is especially important because you don’t have a chance for a re-shoot, the event only happens once! So we want to make sure we take the time to properly offload and store the footage so it doesn’t get lost, deleted or otherwise compromised.

Post-production also works on 12 hour days, and Molly lets you know what that means for video editing. One of the most tedious processes with Live Event editing, is screening the footage. We often overshoot at Live events to make sure we capture as much as we can for an event that’s only happening once (no-re-shoots!). So much time is spent watching the footage to pull out good shots, fun events, and other footage that matches your vision for your video project.

On top of that, there’s color correction, music, sound editing, transitions and more involved in the editing process. How the footage it places together, how it moves, all effects the feel of the video. Did you want people to be hyped and excited? Or did you want them to feel warm and welcomed? Editing can take the footage shot and put it together in a way that can get your message across.

So a 12 hour day isn’t necessarily 12 hours of footage, but you’re getting more than 12 hours of dedication to your video.
